Louisiana Spiritual Awakening Conference Print E-mail
Sammy Tippit was one of three speakers last week at a state wide conference on prayer and spiritual awakening. Dr. Roy Fish, Distinguished Professor of Evangelism at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Dr. John Avant, Vice President of Evangelism for the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention were also speakers.

Tippit spoke about the move of God’s Spirit around the world. He shared about some of the awakenings that he has experienced in places like Romania and the former Soviet Union. He challenged the attendees in the conference to commit themselves to a life of prayer and seeking God’s face. “What God has done in Romania, He can do in America,” he exclaimed. “People in many nations are desperate for a deep work of the Holy Spirit. When we become desperate for revival, we will see God work in our nation, also. God is no respecter of persons.  The color of our skin, the amount of money we have in the bank, or our social position in life really doesn’t matter to Him. He is simply looking for hungry hearts.”

Dr. Fish gave an account of the 1857 Prayer Revival that began in the business district of New York City. The revival spread rapidly across America 150 years ago. He challenged the leaders, “God can do it again.” He said that the great revival was a time in which Christians from all denominations came together to seek God. “God is building His kingdom in revival. He is doing much more than building a denomination.”

Dr. John Avant shared with those present about the revival that came to Coggin Avenue Baptist Church when he was pastor there. God moved in a mighty way as a result of prayer and repentance among college students as well as church members. He said, “When the revival broke out in our church, it happened simultaneously in five churches.” The revival spread to Christian colleges across America. louisiana_revival_conference_2
There were break out sessions on Friday. Dr. Fish spoke on “Praying for the lost” while Sammy Tippit spoke to those present about “Praying for Your Family.” John Avant spoke about “Praying for Revival in your church.” Wayne Jenkins, Evangelism Director for the Louisiana Baptist Convention, said that he was praying for this conference to impact pastors and church leaders throughout the state.
Christian leaders came from around the state to attend the conference. The attendance was varied – a professor from New Orleans Theological Seminary, a prayer group leader from Baton Rouge, a worship leader from New Orleans, and numerous pastors and staff members from around the state were all a part of the conference.

Tippit said, “My prayer is that God will use this conference to light a fire in the hearts of Christian leaders throughout Louisiana. I love the state. It is where I came to Christ. It is where God called me to preach the gospel. It is the place that I long to see revival.”
