Ambassadors For Christ will host its 3rd annual 5K race, Race For Romania, on Saturday March 24, 2007.  The organization, which dedicates itself to raising up a generation of young people who want to serve Christ in all that they do, have also hosted Race For Rwanda(2004) and Race For Angola(2005).

These two races, along with Race For Romania, have allowed both the staff and students at AFC to participate in the trip and also give towards the Packets of Love Project.

“The Packets of Love project is a project we began three years ago in Rwanda,” said Renee Barker, co-chair of The Race For Romania.  “This project enables us to give hundreds of orphans gift packets with various types of games, education items, and toys.”

These items in the past have included a bouncy ball, Bible coloring book, pack of crayons, notebook and pencil, gum, all types of candy, and a jump rope.

“We believe this project is a tangible way that we can show God’s love to these kids,” continued Barker.  “We share with them not only the story of Jesus and how much He loves each and every one of them, but we also strive to give them a physical taste of God’s love.  Many of these kids have never even chewed a stick of gum or had their very own coloring book. It’s one of the most incredible sights to see these beautiful faces light up and children cheering when they receive a bouncy ball or a pack of crayons.”

The Ambassadors For Christ team will head to the country of Romania in July of 2007.  They will be serving by hosting a conference for many of Romania’s young people.  They will incorporate much of the AFC curriculum that was used here in the United States to teach these young people of Romania.  They will also visit several Romanian orphanages and spread the message of God’s love to some of the thousands of orphans that are living in Romania.   “According to official statistics, there are 33,000 orphans in state institutions. The number of unwanted children has reportedly increased by 20 percent since 1989.”  (Institute for War and Peace Reporting)

There are many ways to become involved to help the AFC team to minister in Romania, as well give to the children of this country. 

1. First is to be a participant in the Race For Romania.  This race is a 5K Run/Walk (3.1 miles) and will begin at 8:00 am at the Alamo Heights Swimming Pool in San Antonio, Texas.  Many of the past participants have commented that this course is one of the prettiest courses they have run or walked in. 
2. For those of you who are not runners/walkers, there is an opportunity to volunteer for this race.  Much of the volunteer’s responsibilities in the past have included cheering on and encouraging the participants, as well as helping out with the registration responsibilities.   
3. Finally, for those of you who don’t live in the San Antonio area, there is always an opportunity to donate towards the run.
4. And most important of all - everyone can pray.  Specific prayer requests that the co-chairs, Renee Barker and Bethany Davis, have requested are:  (A) everything will run smoothly in the preparations for the race; (B)the actual race day will have beautiful weather, along with a very smooth-running race day; (C) God will be glorified in all and who are part of Race For Romania.
