Hundreds of people gave their hearts to Christ in an
evangelistic meeting on the outskirts of Monrovia,
Liberia during
a three day evangelistic effort with Sammy Tippit. The San Antonio, Texas
evangelist traveled to this war torn country three years ago, just after the
war ended. There was a tremendous response to his message at that time and
leaders asked him to return this year.
The meetings were held in the football field of the New Kru Town borough, a suburb of Monrovia, the capital city. Thousands
gathered nightly to hear Tippit preach. Many of those in attendance came under
deep conviction of their sin and respond to the evangelist’s appeal to come to
the front of the platform to pray and open their hearts to Christ.
The evangelistic meetings were initiated last Thursday by a
march for Jesus through the borough. Approximately 400 Christians marched, danced, and sang through the main streets of New Kru Town. (See previous article.) People ran
on to the streets to greet the marchers, waving and welcoming them. Many of
those on the streets followed the marchers to the stadium and heard the gospel
and gave their hearts to Christ.
Pastor Emmanuel Gyamfi, chairman of the crusade, brought
Tippit to meet with the Vice President of The Republic of Liberia on Friday.
When Tippit met with Vice President Joseph N. Boakai, he told him how he had
been praying for the nation. The Vice President told Tippit that the greatest
need of the country was for God’s people to pray for the nation.
There was great celebration during the evangelistic
services. But the evangelistic meetings were not the only times of ministry.
Tippit spoke to pastors and leaders on Friday and Saturday mornings. He spoke
to these leaders on Praying for Your Family
during the first session. There was a deep sense of brokenness and repentance
among the leaders. Pastor Gyamfi said, “Pastors have called me saying that God
really used that message in their lives. Many pastors are struggling because
they preach on Sundays, but struggle with their families during the week. This
was a very important message for our pastors.”
Tippit challenged the pastors to pray for a mighty revival
among God’s people in Liberia
and told the leaders, “The Bible says, ‘Who has despised the day of small
things?’ Look for God to work in the small things. You will find Him there when
you search for Him with your whole heart.”
Tippit concluded his time in Liberia by giving thanks and
appreciation to Pastor Gyamfi and his church on Sunday morning. Sammy and Tex
Tippit left the country on Sunday and traveled to Europe before returning to
the United States.
