Millions Pray at Global Day of Prayer Print E-mail
Millions of Christians gathered in more than 200 nations around the world to pray for a mighty revival among God’s people. Leaders of the Global Day of Prayer have stated that their goal is to saturate the world with prayer. The first Global Day of Prayer took place on May 15, 2005 with 156 nations participating and has continuously grown since then.

The primary Global Day of Prayer meeting is conducted on Pentecost Sunday every year. However, there’s more to the GDOP than one meeting. There are 10 days of continuous praying that takes place immediately prior to the one day event. The major event is then followed by 90 days of blessing, a time in which those who have prayed can reach out to their communities with the love and compassion of Christ.

The GDOP grew out of a movement of prayer that began in South Africa and has now traversed the planet. Crowds were smaller this year than previous years in some places in the United States and other countries who were also celebrating Mother’s Day on May 11. However, there was still a move of God’s Spirit.

Several hundred people gathered in San Antonio, Texas for the GDOP. Even though the crowds were smaller than the previous year for the central prayer meeting, there was more participation in the 10 days of prayer prior to the main event. Churches gathered people to seek God during those days.

One church in San Antonio had a full prayer service every evening leading up to Pentecost Sunday. One of the chief characteristics of the San Antonio, Texas meeting was the diversity among those attending. People from various ethnic, church, and racial backgrounds attended the meeting. Intercessors from the platform included pastors, educators, prayer leaders, and ministry leaders. Sammy Tippit brought an evangelistic message at the beginning of the meeting. Several people responded to his call to give their hearts and lives to Jesus.

The San Antonio venue was just one of hundreds where people gathered to seek God. They met in churches, stadiums, conference centers, in yards, under trees and in open fields. A spirit of unity filled the venues as God’s people around the world sought God.
