Moody prophet
But Elijah wouldn't go out. His present mood better suited his cave
surroundings. He wasn't yet ready for the sunshine, the fresh breezes
and the broad open spaces.
And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that
meat 40 days and 40 nights unto Horeb, the Mount of God. And he came
thither unto a cave and lodged there; and, behold, the Word of the Lord
came to him, and he said unto him, “What does thou here, Elijah?” I
Kings 19:8-9
God's faithfulness
What wonderful encouragement does the servant of God find in this
incident in the life of Elijah! Underneath the picture might be written
the words:
Unless we know the deep meaning of those words, "death worketh in us,"
we shall never know the meaning of those other words, "life worketh in
you." The word "bless" is derived from the old Anglo-Saxon word,
"blood," and the idea conveyed is that before we can really bless our
fellowmen, we must give away a part of our life; we must shed blood.
