Every man or woman of God needs an education. But the kind of education necessary for the making of a servant of the Lord is different from schooling within society. The world's school gives people information. God's school provides life experience. One goes to the world's school in great institutions and fine buildings. But he learns in God's school on the playing field of hard knocks and humbling encounters. On completion of the world's school, a person has a degree. On completion of God's school, he has character.
Moses went to God's school. He had already been schooled in the finest institutions of Egypt. He grew up as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. He had the best of opportunities available within society. But none of that prepared him for God's plan for his life. He had gained great natural knowledge, but no knowledge of Christ. But God had a plan for Moses education. He had to allow Moses to fail before he would enroll in His school.
The Bible says, "One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, "Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?" The man said, "Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses was afraid and thought, "What I did must have become known." When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well" (Ex. 2:11-15 NIV).
God had to allow Moses to experience failure before he could be used in His kingdom. God enrolled Moses in His school in that Midianite desert. In essence, he began his studies in the University of Humility and studied under Professor Holy Spirit. Upon graduation, he would be God's man. He would have acquired his DDG degree - Doctorate of Dependence on God.
There were several courses that Moses would have to take in the University of Humility located in Midian. First, he had to learn that God's work must be done in God's time. Moses killed the Egyptian. He saw the suffering of His people. He wanted to set them free from their bondage. But he was forty years too early. God has a timetable. The man of God is the person who is in the right place in the right time with the right message. Moses was in the right place at the wrong time. Moses had to learn to walk by the Holy Spirit and get on God's timetable.
But Moses had to also learn that God's work must be done in God's power. Moses was trained and skilled in the warfare of the Egyptians. But God's work isn't done in the power of the human flesh. It must be done in the power of the Holy Spirit. Moses saw wrongs being inflicted upon his Hebrew brethren. He wanted to correct it. He did his best, but his best did nothing but bring more suffering to his people. He had to learn that God's work cannot be done "by might or power, but by the Spirit of the Lord."
Moses had one final lesson to learn in the University of Humility. He had to learn that God's work must be done God's way. The way of God is character. The way of the world leads to death and more bondage. The way of God leads to Christ like character. Moses had to meet God on that mountain in Midian before he could graduate from the University of Humility. It was in that encounter that he would begin to really know God. Out of his knowledge of God, he would develop character. Then, and only then, Moses would be prepared to lead God's people out of their slavery.
