An Impure Pulpit Print E-mail
A few years ago I was traveling back from India to the United States. I was anxious to find out what had been happening in my own country. I picked up and American newspaper in an airport to read on the plane. The headlines told of a pastor who had resigned his church because of immorality. A couple months later on my way home from Africa I again read a newspaper on the flight home. This time the headlines told of a famous evangelist who had been caught in immorality.

While I was in South Africa one of the leading Muslim scholars was advertising that Islam had triumphed over Christianity. His evidence? He had recently debated a leading American evangelist. Soon after the debate, the evangelist's immoral behavior was exposed. The Islamic scholar stated that validated that Islam was right and that Christianity was false. Not long after that I witnessed to a Muslim university student in Albania. He had been told of immoral failures in Western Christian leaders. He had a difficult time accepting what any Christian from the West had to say.

If there's to be a great revival in the West then there must be a restoration of integrity and purity among our leaders. There are many very godly pastors and evangelists and Christian leaders in this country, and we must honor and respect those leaders. At the same time we must lift high the banner of righteousness for all Christians and especially our leaders.

Because I travel internationally this is especially close to my heart. To great extent we have lost our credibility with the non-Christian world. If we are to be used of God to impact the world for Christ, then we must have our credibility restored. That can be re-established only as we set our hearts on knowing God. He must be the number one desire of our hearts. Before big budgets, big buildings and magnificent ministries, we must passionately desire to know Him.

Jesus said, "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God." We need much more than programs, talents and strategies in this generation. We need humble, holy, praying men and women. We need a generation of leaders that have hearts that long to walk in purity of life and to know Him.

Why don't you pray for your pastor and other Christian leaders today? Ask God to protect them and to keep them pure. Thank God for your godly pastor and pray for this country. Pray for purity in the pulpit.
