Quite often I am asked how and why I began traveling internationally. It all began several years ago in a high crime area of Chicago. My wife Tex and I were living in the ghettos and ministering to young people on the streets of that great city. Every morning we would spend time praying together as a team. We would take a different nation each week and pray for that country.
One morning we were praying for Germany. As we prayed God broke my heart as well as one of my colleagues heart for the nation. We stayed until late that evening praying. We both sensed that God was leading us to go to Germany to preach the gospel. But we had several problems. First, we didn’t speak German. Second, we didn’t know anyone in Germany, and finally we didn’t have any money to get there. The only things we had were broken hearts and access to the throne of God.
We prayed through the night, and I remembered that I had a list of English speaking pastors in Germany as well as their telephone numbers. I picked one pastor’s name and number at random. He had never heard of me, and he wasn’t very encouraging. However, two weeks later I received a letter from him in the mail. Not long after I spoke with him on the telephone this pastor read of our ministry in Chicago. God had touched his heart, and he invited me to speak at a pastor’s conference in Germany.
God answered our prayers, and He opened the doors for us to preach throughout Germany. There was only one remaining problem. We didn’t have money to travel to Germany. Later, a school teacher came to our office and wanted to speak to me. He had been having His time alone with God when God spoke deeply to his heart. He had been saving his money, and God led him to take it out of the bank and give it to us. I couldn’t believe it.
I learned one great lesson. We can trust God to meet our needs when we know that we’re in the will of God. It’s amazing that 37 years and six continents later, we’ve seen hundreds of thousand of the people come to Christ. I’ll never forget that it all began at a prayer meeting. Spend time with God, and you will begin to feel what He feels and do what He desires you to do. Why don’t you spend some time with God today and let Him break your heart for a lost world.
