When the wind of God blows across the pages of history, the chapter changes. There certainly has been a change of chapters in Eastern Europe during the past several years. I'm convinced that the only explanation for what has transpired is a divine intervention of God in the affairs of human history.
This is certainly true in the nation of Romania. Christians were persecuted severely under the cruel dictatorship of Nicolai Ceaucescu. I know pastors who went to prison for their faith. In 1988 I was arrested and deported from the country for preaching the Gospel. It was a dark period in Romania's history.
However, during the 1970s there was a pastor in the city or Oradea who taught the people in his church to pray in a most unusual manner. He told them pray that one day they would be able to stand in the great stadiums of the nation and boldly proclaim the gospel. That seemed impossible and almost absurd. But the people prayed - not for one week, one month or even one year. They prayed for 15 years.
In December 1989, the police were sent to arrest a pastor in the city of Timisoara. Christians tried to protect him. The secret police fired into the crowd of innocent men, women and children. When the blood of the martyrs began to flow into the streets, there was a release of the glory of God on the people of God. Two hundred thousand people gathered in the square of Timisoara. You must remember that these were people brainwashed in their schools with scientific atheism.
As Peter Dugalescu, pastor of First Baptist Church, stood to speak, the throngs of people began to shout in unison, "There is a God. There is a God." Faith erupted in their hearts and a revolution was birthed in the nation. This scene was multiplied in cities throughout the country. In May of 1990, I stood in an outdoor stadium for the first time in the history of Romania and proclaimed the gospel. I was overwhelmed to watch the wind of God change the chapters of Romania's history. I knew the secret was the private prayers of one pastor.
The western world is engulfed in spiritual darkness. We desperately need a change of chapters. Will you pray fervently and persistently for God to intervene in our history? God said through Jeremiah, "Call unto me and I will answer thee. And show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not."
