Maintaining Your Devotional Life
Sammy Tippit: Monty, there are a lot of guys with a busy schedule, and I know during the NBA season especially, I look at you guys and say, “How do you do this?” You know? It’s incredibly busy. How do you maintain a personal devotional life (Bible study, prayer time) in such a busy schedule?

Monty Williams: I just try to follow the model that Jesus put there for us. He gave us a great example. He got up early in the morning and prayed to the Father. He was never in a rush. He never allowed people to dictate what he was going to do. He was always about his Father’s business. It can be tough at times, but it’s doable.
You know, I used to be a big-time golfer as far as wanting to play all the time. I was amazed, when I felt like the Lord wanted me to put the clubs up for a season, how much more time I had to study the Word, to do family devotions. In the NBA, we have so much free time. It just depends on doing what you know you should be doing. As men, we do what we want to do.

Nobody can tell us what we want to do. We do what we want. During the season, I make Bible study a priority. It’s the application I’m trying to make a priority.
Sammy: Right, right. I think what I’m hearing you say too is that we have time; it’s just we fill that time with stuff that sometimes isn’t really important. Am I right on that?
Monty: Yeah. I mean, how many times can you watch ESPN? How many times can you watch Swamp People or any of the shows that are popular? You can memorize them after the second or third time. It boils down to making God a priority. Some of the mature believers I’ve been around who are 50, 60, 70, 85 years old, are still studying the Word. I’m watching how God has blessed that and how they are just vibrant and lacking nothing. Not perfect. Not had easy lives. But the Lord has honored their act of submission. Studying his Word has been a huge part of my life and my family’s life.
Sammy: So, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Monty: That’s right.
Sammy: Thank you, Monty.
Monty: Yeah. Thank you.

Psalm : Chapter 46

1)  God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2)  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3)  though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.[c] 4)  There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 5)  God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. 6)  Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. 7)  The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. 8)  Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. 9)  He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields[d] with fire. 10)  He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 11)  The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Book of the Month

Sammy Tippit told his fiancée, “I can’t promise we’ll be rich, but life won’t be boring.”
Sammy had no idea what an understatement that would become. Beginning in the bars of Baton Rouge and the nightclubs of Chicago, Tippit has shared the news of life-changing faith in Christ all over the world – including in the middle of a revolution in Romania, the aftermath of genocide in Rwanda, and war in Burundi and the Congo.
Sammy’s lifelong adventure has come at a great price. He’s been cursed, threatened, arrested, deported, and blacklisted. He’s also been personally broken, ravaged with illness, and devastated by grief.
Yet he continues to preach to in stadiums, in open fields, and via satellite technology to hundreds of thousands around the globe.  For all other books…
