Psalm : Chapter 119
22)  Remove from me their scorn and contempt, for I keep your statutes. 23)  Though rulers sit together and slander me, your servant will meditate on your decrees. 24)  Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors. ד Daleth 25)  I am laid low in the dust; preserve my life according to your word. 26)  I gave an account of my ways and you answered me; teach me your decrees. 27)  Cause me to understand the way of your precepts, that I may meditate on your wonderful deeds.

Book of the Month

Sammy Tippit told his fiancée, “I can’t promise we’ll be rich, but life won’t be boring.”
Sammy had no idea what an understatement that would become. Beginning in the bars of Baton Rouge and the nightclubs of Chicago, Tippit has shared the news of life-changing faith in Christ all over the world – including in the middle of a revolution in Romania, the aftermath of genocide in Rwanda, and war in Burundi and the Congo.
Sammy’s lifelong adventure has come at a great price. He’s been cursed, threatened, arrested, deported, and blacklisted. He’s also been personally broken, ravaged with illness, and devastated by grief.
Yet he continues to preach to in stadiums, in open fields, and via satellite technology to hundreds of thousands around the globe.  For all other books…

Day 5 – The Word of God in Discipleship

Picture this: You’re traveling to a hostile country where your faith is forbidden. Border guards search your luggage and confiscate your Bible – the very tool you need for ministry. What do you do? Give up? Go home?

That’s exactly what happened to me in communist Romania in 1980. The guards took our Bibles, but they couldn’t take what I had hidden in my heart – God’s Word memorized and planted deep in my soul.

Here’s the life-transforming truth I want you to understand today: Your spiritual growth and effectiveness as a disciple depend entirely on how well you grip God’s Word – not just reading it occasionally, but taking it into your life through multiple pathways that make it impossible for the enemy to steal.

Psalm 119:11 gives the secret: “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” This isn’t just about Bible study – it’s about spiritual survival and supernatural transformation.

I can hold this Bible with two fingers, but if Satan wants to snatch it away, he can. There’s a thief named Satan who will do everything to steal God’s Word from your life. But if you develop a five-finger grip – using all five ways to take God’s Word into your life – it becomes impossible for him to steal what’s in your heart.

First Finger: Hearing the Word. Romans 10:17 says, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Faith doesn’t begin in your heart – it begins when God speaks to your heart through His Word. Most of you heard someone speak from the Bible when you gave your heart to Jesus. That’s how God plants the seed of faith.

I remember preaching in Soviet Moldova where a journalist asked, “Do you really believe people’s lives will change because you speak some words?” I said, “Yes, because the words I speak come from the Bible, and God’s Word is powerful.” Thousands came to Christ that night, and decades later, entire churches exist because faith comes by hearing.

Second Finger: Reading the Word. Jesus said in John 15:3, “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.” There’s something incredible that happens when you systematically read through Scripture. Don’t just read randomly – read consistently and systematically through God’s Word.

Third Finger: Meditating on the Word. When you read or hear something that speaks to your heart, spend time that day thinking about it, letting it sink deep. I underline passages, write dates when God speaks, and pray, “Lord, don’t let me lose what You’ve spoken today.” It’s getting past your head into your soul and spirit.

Fourth Finger: Memorizing the Word. This is your spiritual sword. When Jesus was tempted, what did He do? He quoted Scripture. When those Romanian guards took my Bible, they couldn’t take what was hidden in my heart. Psalm 119:11 promises that memorized Scripture keeps us from sin and gives us victory over temptation.

Fifth Finger: Studying the Word. Second Timothy 2:15 says, “Study to show yourself approved to God.” Do book studies, character studies like Moses’ life that transformed mine, or word studies on faith, love, or hope. Use online tools to dig deeper into God’s truth.

But there’s more than five fingers – there’s the palm of your hand, which represents applying God’s Word. James 1:22 warns, “Do not merely listen to the word… Do what it says.” You don’t want just head knowledge – you want heart transformation.

Here’s the practical application: Colossians 2:6 says, “As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.” How did you receive Him? By hearing God’s Word and faith rising in your heart. How do you walk in Him? The same way – by continually taking His Word into your life.

John 5:39 shows us that on every page of Scripture, Jesus is there. Jesus said, “You search the Scriptures… they testify of Me.” Read with an eye to see Jesus. The Bible is all about Jesus – never forget that.

When you develop this five-finger grip – hearing, reading, meditating, memorizing, and studying – plus applying God’s Word, you’ll have an unbreakable hold on Scripture. The enemy can attack, but he cannot steal what’s deeply planted in your heart.

Here’s your challenge: Right now, how many fingers do you have on God’s Word? Are you holding it with just two fingers, making it easy for Satan to steal? Or are you developing the unbreakable five-finger grip?

Stop making excuses about not having time. Your spiritual survival depends on this. Pick two verses this week and memorize them. Establish a systematic reading plan. Find times to meditate on what God shows you.

Remember, if you want to become like Jesus, you must know who Jesus is through His Word. The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but when God’s Word is hidden in your heart, you have a sword that destroys his works.

Get a grip on God’s Word, and watch God do extraordinary things in your life. Your growth as a disciple and your effectiveness in making disciples depend on it.
